What is "No Poo""?

For most people, the thought of skipping a shampoo for even a day makes us feel icky. But a new trend has emerged over the past few years and they're calling it No Poo. Despite it's bizarre name, No Poo is actually something that will benefit and rejuvenate your hair.

What is No Poo?

No Poo may actually refer to a couple of things. Simply speaking, it's short for no shampoo. Most shampoos contain harmful sulfates that dry out and damage your hair. In turn you need to buy conditioners and other products to put the moisture back into your hair. Sulfates can cause frizz, breakage, and some studies show that they can cause hair loss, as well. So why, you may be wondering, are sulfates in shampoo? They are what makes your shampoo lather up. They are also used in soap and toothpaste, and many other products. If you're wondering what else sulfates are used in, you may be wishing you hadn't asked. Sulfates are also used in laundry detergent. You know how you take your really nice silk blouses to be dry cleaned. Ever wondered what was in detergent that was so bad for your nice clothes? Sulfates.
Not only are they bad for your hair, clothes and skin, but they also raise some health concerns as your body absorbs them through the skin. Some sulfates are processed by your liver, but there are more harmful ones that your liver is unable to process. Sound scary? It is.

Luckily, the problem has been identified and we now have alternatives to ordinary shampoo. So let's get back to the question at hand: What is No Poo?
No poo, for some people, means using no shampoo whatsoever. The idea is your scalp overproduces oil in response to the drying properties of shampoo, so when we stop using shampoo our scalp will quickly return to normal and eventually we won't be walking around with greasy hair.
To other people, no poo means using homemade or natural shampoos. This includes mixtures with baking soda, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and much, much more.
Lastly, no poo can refer to simply using products that don't contain any sulfates. There are brands that make shampoos that contain no sulfates. Some people also do something called a conditioner rinse. Conditioner is able to remove oil buildup from hair, and if it's treated as shampoo (massaged into the scalp) it will leave your hair fresh and clean.
